Ten Belles
10 Rue de la Grange aux Belles, 75010 Paris, France
Editor's Review
Ten Belles is a lovely little café near the Canal Saint-Martin that blends good coffee with a very laid-back, almost insouciant, vibe. Staff chat happily through the hatched windows with customers or people passing on the street, and there's a real sense that this is a popular nieghbourhood hang-out, frequented by the large number of creatives and students that live around this area.
The coffee comes from Belleville, but there are various guests as well, including Assembly and Placid; the emphasis is on French-roasted coffee, and it works well. Food comes in the guise of freshly made sandwiches, and they are really good, as well as pastries and cakes. They also do various home-made juices and smoothies.
Ten Belles is exactly the sort of place to seek out if you want to know where local coffee lovers hang out. It's hardly a secret, but its location is a little off the standard tourist track. Ten Belles is also five minutes' walk from Artazart on the Quai de Valmy, which is an absolute must for graphic design/type fans – our tip would be to go there, buy a beautiful book, and then enjoy a great coffee just across the canal.
