Sweatshop
232 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
Editor's Review
"Coffee & vibes" is what Sweatshop claims to be all about at this Melbourne-style high concept coffee bar from two Aussie designers. Perfect for the posh neighborhood of Williamsburg, this cafe, whose design studio is just blocks away, is definitely all about design in addition to coffee. At the patio entrance, a wall reads, "Don't look for love, look for coffee," and branded hats and water bottles labeled "Cool Beans" line the shelves of other trendy retail products and tasteful indoor plants. Black walls and grey interior accents make for an overall boutiquey experience, and if an espresso machine and kiosk weren't present, you'd guess you were inside a clothing shop.
Despite this, Sweatshop still functions efficiently as a cafe, and maintains an ample amount of seating. Sweatshop serves Australian-style espresso tonics and lattes named their own slang terms like "esky" and "sparky," plus other classic espresso-milk beverages with soy, almond and macadamia for non-dairy alternatives. Savory brunch items come with ingredients like vegemite, baked beans, and cheddar mustard biscuits, and pastries are locally sourced from bakeries like Ovenly and Underwest Donuts.
