Steampunk Coffee
49A Kirk Ports, North Berwick EH39 4HL, UK
Editor's Review
You may see Steampunk Coffee's surfboard yellow kitted out VW camper van around the farmers markets of Edinburgh and the borders, usually with a long queue of people knowing they'll be getting quality, interesting roasts, made by expert baristas. This philosopy extends to their headquarters — a converted warehouse opposite an old kirk in the centre of North Berwick, a half hour train ride along the coast from the capital.
Set just behind the high street, you might not stumble upon Steampunk as naturally as you would some of North Berwick's other cafes, but it's worth seeking out, even if it means walking down the narrow pavements with Google Maps out. A beautiful, large mezzanine level overhangs the unadorned ground floor, on which Steampunk have their roastery, as well as a range of coffee related paraphernalia available for purchase. Every coffee is roasted on site — no guest espressos here, instead a range of different roasts from around the world, available as filter or espresso. As well as a daytime brunch and lunch spot — they make soups, sandwiches and a chilli in the morning, and when it's gone it's gone —they make the best use of their space with a nice programme of evening events, including pizza nights on Fridays, regular private dining events, and games clubs. They also offer their own coffee subscription service for anyone looking to try their range from home. Make no mistake, these guys know what they're doing — one of Scotland's best.
