Pamban Chai & Coffee House
Camden Market, North Yard, Chalk Farm Rd, London, Camden NW1 8AH, UK
Editor's Review
Pamban is an island and bridge between India and Sri Lanka. It is also a Chai & Coffee House in Stables Market in Camden - an open space with graphic design posters and neat décor ramping up the aesthetics - but the namesake isn’t a mere coincidence. The two founders of the coffee house have Indian and Sri Lankan heritage respectively, and have joined together with the passion for bringing South Asian methods and ingredients to a Western context.
Although there is a multitude of coffees and ayurvedic teas to choose from, masala chai is their speciality and is made in the traditional way, spices ground by hand, so while you’re here it would be rude not to – the Karak (chai with condensed milk) is delicious, and so is the Saffron chai if you fancy something a little less sweet. The food is similarly spice-orientated, and a range of custom snacks are also available to buy. What makes Camden so great is that it’s full of cultures, stalls and cafes all fighting for attention, but by finding a niche and representing it subtly yet perfectly, Pamban still manages to stand out.
