Kahaila Brick Lane
135 Brick Lane, E1 6SB
Editor's Review
Kahaila opened as a coffeeshop in 2012, It operates as a charity that also runs the Luminary Bakery - a social enterprise for vulnerable women and Ella’s Home - a safe environment for the victims of modern day slavery as well as Reflex - a faith-based organisation that works with young women in prison, equipping them with skills. Kahaila invests its profits in building community and in these charitable projects.
Aptly, the café aims to create a space where community can happen. It’s an accessible place to relax, a very social one where people are more inclined to interact with each other than some places. Coffee is no afterthought and a Climpson and Sons flat white goes down well, as does a single origin batch brew. There are new Luminary Bakery cakes every time we visit and plenty of gluten free options. Breakfasts and lunches are hearty and options include bacon rolls, porridge, granola and smoothies, sandwiches, soups and stews.
Other cafes in the area have come and gone but Kahaila continues, helped no doubt that it is firmly entrenched in the community and works hard to keep itself neighbourhood friendly.
