Joe — Pro Shop
131 West 21st St New York, NY 10011
Editor's Review
Joe's "Pro Shop" fronts the local chain's headquarters, serving equally as calling card and cafe, and acts as a bit of a proving ground for Joe's more exclusive roasts, like their Top Shelf line of limited coffees, which are regularly available here. Classes and events, from barista workshops to guest cuppings by other roasters, as well as the occasional lecture or film, are regularly held in the back of the shop, which also serves as a training lab for Joe's own staff.
Similarly, this unique Joe also reaches out to the global coffee community by offering an ever-changing cast of interesting international (and local) roasters, rare for a coffee company that roasts its own coffee, and rarer yet in a city that's eschewed the multi-roaster concept almost completely these days. Look for guest beans from roasters like George Howell, Sey Coffee, Neat, The Barn, Coptic Light, Tim Wendelboe, Phil & Sebastian, and more. You'll be able to try guest coffees on batch brew, pour-over, or espresso, alongside Joe's own quality roasts. As such, Pro Shop has long been the place to go when you're in the city looking for an interesting coffee that's a cut above, brewed with superior skill.
In addition, the store also serves as a hub for home brewers and amateur baristas in the market for a good selection of brewing gear, and you'll find a range of grinders, scales, brewing gear like Chemex, Kalita, and AeroPress, as well as portafilter screens, tampers, and the like. Seating is as limited as the brief menu, though a small selection of treats (try the JoeConut macaron) is available on the bar.
