Iris & June
1 Howick Place, Victoria, SW1P 1WG
Editor's Review
Iris & June have opened on a quiet street set just behind the House of Fraser. This is an area which has been in need of a quality sit down coffeehouse for a while to add to the superb Flat Cap Victoria on nearby Strutton Ground. The cafe is a bright, modern design – clean and functional with light coloured furniture, large windows, metallic sculptural lighting, beautiful classic tiling and seats for around twenty.
All the expected ingredients of a quality coffee shop are in place: the Strada, EK43 (for single origins and eventually filter), Mazzer and the Überboiler. The coffee is from Ozone who roast on the darker side for speciality coffee, but the baristas bring out the best. Our coffee had a rich dark chocolate sweetness both as espresso and flat white. The food is very good indeed and the savoury dishes have a degree of individuality. When we visited we sampled belly pork sandwiches and a superb lentil, bacon and pineapple salad.
Kiwi owner Jodie has taken the time to get things right and plans to introduce filter coffee to the menu soon. She named the café after her grandmothers. What a lovely idea and what a way to add personal authenticity to the project. Worth a visit, especially if you’re in the area.
