HotBlack Coffee
245 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M5V 1Z4, Canada
Editor's Review
Having a tagline claiming the "best coffee ever" is definitely a confident approach. But when your owners have a laundry list of accolades, and you are located in the centre of the Queen Street West shopping district, you can start to understand not only the confidence, but also the need to stand out. Co-owner Momiji Kishi brings her years of competition experience to the design of their coffee program with precision and quality being presented at a very high level. And to round out the aesthetics of the space and to curate a vibe for the café, her partner Jimson Bienenstock brings management experience from his time with Toronto’s Soho House and Montecito.
Even if you didn’t know the level of expertise present behind the bar, you would be confident in the quality of your drink based on the equipment alone. A Modbar sits on the large red cement bar with the surface behind displaying a Mahlkönig EK43 and three Nuova Simonelli Mythos grinders with your choice of three different espresso options. Maybe the most surprising part of the shop is the fact that even in what seems to be a minimal amount of space, they are baking fresh bread daily, which is available for sale by the loaf or as a part of their enticing food menu.
