Gimme Coffee — Lorimer St.
495 Lorimer St., Brooklyn, NY 11211
Editor's Review
This Ithaca-based mini-chain's been going strong in Williamsburg since 2005, long before every barber shop and restaurant in the neighborhood installed a fancy espresso machine. Its original New York City location (nowadays, there are three) has had many face-lifts, but its current incarnation is clean, simple, and spare, evolving as it has with the community to accommodate not only hipster newcomers but the children that they've given birth to in the past decade. Proximity to the hugely busy Lorimer-Metropolitan G/L train stop ensures a steady flow of morning commuters, but later draws a mellow laptop crowd as well as several locals who pop in and out throughout the day.
Gimme's own roasted coffees are on display here, from espresso to single origin drip, and can be had alongside numerous treats, which – the chain is from Ithaca after all – include many gluten free and vegan options, like Dank banana bread and Dunwell Donuts. Alternative "milks" include soy, oat, and almond. Though this chain is more community-centric than cutting-edge coffee, a history of New York City's coffee culture would be incomplete without a nod to this iconic location.
