Fondation Café
16 Rue Dupetit-Thouars, 75003 Paris, France
Editor's Review
Fondation is a little place just south of République on a street named after an 18th/19th century French botanist, Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars. There is a busy, chatty seating area outside; inside is limited to three or four tables, but there is room to perch up for a while, as long as you don't mind being in close proximity to others. This isn't a café for work, but is clearly a popular destination for people catching up with each other, and the atmosphere is friendly and vibrant.
Coffee comes from Cuillier, roasted at Belleville, and is well done on the beautiful Spirit machine; you can buy the beans as well, should you wish, and there is a reasonable retail offering for home-brewers, which isn't as common in Paris as you might think. Fresh sandwiches and the ubiquitous excellent cakes and pastries are the food offering – nothing substantial, but it's all nicely done.
