Dark Horse Espresso Bar
401 Richmond St W, Toronto, ON M5V 3A8, Canada
Editor's Review
When an industrial heritage building gets renovated to become a cultural hub filled with artists, innovators, galleries, shops and entrepreneurs, it's needless to say an exciting opportunity for a coffee company. In the lobby area of the lower level, Dark Horse has melded with the surroundings beautifully and understandably found little need to alter the bones of the space. A winding bar slithers across the room leading to a general seating area for the public and building tenants. Bar seating looks over their cream coloured La Marzocco Strada and Mahlkönig K30 Twin grinders to provide their streamlined coffee service. Although drinks are currently only available to take away, the hope is to continue to grow into the space and establish themselves as a more conventional café destination.
The touches of modern renovation are clear around the space, especially with the new storefronts all around the building. But thankfully the architects have succeeded in keeping the spirit of the original structure with ample amounts of exposed brick, raw wood columns and industrial piping. The creaks heard from the hardwood as tenants walk on the floors above leave no doubt about the charm and history of this lovely setting.
