Brooklyn Kolache Co.
520 Dekalb Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205, USA
Editor's Review
On the busy Bed-Stuy thoroughfare of Dekalb Avenue sits this unlikely outpost: a bakery and cafe specializing in kolache (pronounced roughly ko-la-chay, but you'll easily find an argument about those vowel sounds), specifically the Texas version of these square Eastern European sweet or savory dough-and-filling treats that pair wonderfully with coffee.
The cafe is simple and spacious for the area – a front room is suitable to convivial chatter over coffee and treats, while beyond the coffee bar you'll find more than ample seating to work and think awhile, with several communal work tables as well as smaller spots to socialize. In nice weather, continue back to the patio with your chorizo and egg, or rhubarb, or cherry and sweet cheese, or chocolate, or pimento cheese kolache (or any of a dozen more) along with either a straightforward coffee from Bed Stuy neighbor roaster Kitten Coffee, a housemade chai, or a fancy signature drink like the Arnold & Laura Palmer, made with black tea, hibiscus, and lemonade. While the kolache are more the stars here than the coffee, the chill, unpretentious vibes and comfortable space make it a winner for the borough, not just the neighborhood. Don't sleep on the blood orange sticky bun, either.
