Birch Coffee — Flatiron

Birch takes a holistic approach to the coffee business, from the design of their cafes, to their staff, to their roasting operation, bakery and other food partners…all of it. These guys know how to make a welcoming shop, and this lovely café, combining two storefronts into a quirky but inviting whole, is a classic, with book-lined nooks, various seating options, and lots of windows. Birch has its own roaster, in Long Island City, and they have started to source their own teas as well, and the well-trained staff here knows how to deliver sturdy espresso drinks, cold brew (in popular take-away growlers as well), and drip coffee options.

There is a nice selection of pastries, from Brooklyn’s Whimsy & Spice, and Lenka granola bars. And while they don’t have a kitchen here, the cold case features a number great sandwiches and parfait options from Bimmy. Plus they have a program called “Ignition Initiative,” where they offer their customers little conversation prompts if you want to actually make a friend and chat over coffee rather than stare blankly at your phone in a room full of strangers. Mildly hilarious, maybe, but it fits in with the genuine, friendly approach Birch takes to their coffee culture. Give it a shot! (I’ll take a double shot, actually.)
