Aucuba Coffee Roasters
South Melbourne VIC 3205, 108 Bank St, Melbourne VIC 3205, Australia
Editor's Review
Aucuba takes its name from one of the many legends in the history of coffee: on his way to a monastery, a weary old wise man named Aucuba took it upon himself to introduce the beans he discovered on his journey to some monks. So too Mark (a qualified Q Grader) has taken it upon himself to introduce some of his amazing beans and roasts himself to those making the journey, emphasising a philosophy of teaching people about coffee, where it comes from, different approaches, and being able to see a roast in action.
There is a dedicated brew bar where you can get an impromptu coffee lesson from the micro roaster and sample some of the coffee. A blend for smooth milky drinks and an option of two select single origins for black coffee are on offer, a batch brew for some quick filter or up to four options for pour over, usually a v60 or if you feel like something special, a syphon brew, each highlighting distinct varieties. The venue itself is interesting – its design is a small mesh of two different styles, one modern and one vintage, trying to honour what used to house a small bank then printing press. It’s open but cozy, bright, inviting with a lot of greenery. The white and blue pineapple wallpaper behind the brew bar is definitely a sight to see.
