Abuelo
26 Southampton St, London WC2E, UK
Editor's Review
Covent Garden itself has been a bit of a blind spot for speciality coffee. The high rents and tourist flow have likely made independent operators shy away from this tremendously popular destination.
That said, Abuelo has just arrived - the closest speciality coffee pitch to the Covent Garden so far - and we hope it tempts tourists away from the chains.
With experience of cafés and restaurants in Melbourne and Sydney, this de la Vega family affair offers very good coffee via espresso or filter. A warm, welcoming café, the large communal table - offering most of the seats - feels like a welcome respite from the surrounding bustle. Their own espresso roast is smooth and balanced, and everything is made, and served, with Antipodean discipline. Whilst there wasn't time for food, the day and evening menus make for mouth watering reading.
