Peckham now has a number of unique independent coffee shops that have all been designed and opened on a low budget and all seem ‘made to measure’ for their local area rather than being ‘off the peg’. None are friendlier spaces than Old Spike and none have better coffee. The coffee is the focus here as a roaster/café/retail space and the coffee is excellent.

Old Spike Roastery was established as a social enterprise: a specialist coffee roaster with a social mission to help London’s homeless through training, jobs and housing. A great example of that is employee Lucy who was hired by co-founder Cemel Ezel via her Big Issue position outside Harris + Hoole on Tooley Street. Ezel and Richard Robinson founded Old Spike and run it with the support and involvement of Rob Dunne.

It’s a great social hub, where visitors are welcomed by Lucy or Jonny and often find themselves in stimulating conversation with other customers and staff. It’s a small space, dominated by the Probat LB5 roaster and shelves of equipment and roasted coffee beans but with elegant crockery and a long bar that makes the most of a small space and encourages interaction.

Whenever I visit Peckham, I can’t resist a visit to Old Spike, partly because it has such a lovely atmosphere but mostly for the quality of the coffee itself. I recommend you do the same.
