56 St James
56 Saint James St, E17 7PE
Editor's Review
Walthamstow, with its quaint village, fascinating William Morris Gallery, endless street market and terrific green stretches, has always had much to offer. Despite the attactions, residents have been calling out for speciality coffee for years. 56 St James has happily answered that call. Located proudly on a bend in St James Street bearing an impressive pineapple stencil on its side, the only thing left from the accountants previously leasing the space are the dark brown tinted windows, which work strangely well with the interior wood paneling and lush copper countertop.
56 St James is a true community affair with fun, bright “pineapple portraits” (I’m sensing a theme here) supplied by a friend and home baked treats provided by the owner’s mother. Children are encouraged to be let loose on the giant chalkboard and National Geographic fans can indulge in 30 years of uninterrupted copies. Serving Nude coffee and guests to the E17 locals, 56 St James gives burgeoning Walthamstow a quirky (pineapple flavoured) heart.
Their all day brunch on Friday, Saturday and Sundays uses Ginger Pig rare breed, free range meat & eggs and Today Bread sourdough baked in E17. Wash it down with freshly squeezed mimosas & juices. On Friday evenings, they open late from 6 - 11.30pm with changing selection of cocktails, wild card beers, organic wine and charcuterie & cheese boards.
