Coffee Roaster Introduction: Chipp Coffee
Best Coffee's roastery guide is a compilation of the very best, tried & tested coffee roasters from around the world. We’ve hand-selected a small collection of amazing coffees for you to sample. Not all coffees are created equal, and not all coffees make it into our shop. So we’re starting a series of articles shining a light on our chosen roasteries to explain why we picked them for your drinking delight.
Chipp Coffee
Where: Leeds
Who: Brothers Zach and Alastair keep things ticking over between them. The company was founded by Zach, who has over 10 years’ worth of coffee-industry knowledge behind him. Alastair looks after marketing and sales, whilst also holding down another full-time job.
Since when: 2016
Why: We like this one-and-a-half-man-band for their full-throttle attitude and impressive lifting power for such a small outfit. We admire Chipp Coffee for sitting ethical sourcing and sustainability at the heart of their company from the foundations up, starting as they mean to go on with a keen eye on here they want to go & how they’re getting there.
What’s the story: Initially Chipp Coffee Co, was founded as Zach worked as a freelance roasting and sensory consultant. In 2018 it was time to practise what he preached & Zach turned his attentions to starting a roastery. Now equipped with a 10kg roaster, a few kettles and far too many cupping bowls; Chipp Coffee Co. has been flying high ever since.
Sustainability credentials:
As a small company; Chipp largely relies on importers for sourcing their green coffee, but have made sure to develop string bonds with a few who share their passion for traceability. As they grow they’re forging connections directly with growers, especially those involved in community initiatives.
Chipp’s packaging is all strictly 100% recyclable and carbon neutral while the company itself works hard to offset their own carbon emissions too.
Locally they support a range of community initiatives and projects, promoting education and local creatives as well as choosing various charities throughout the year to benefit from their donation projects.
Our favourite coffees:
Luz Mila Cinnamon Coffee: This micro-lot coffee from Luz Mila G González is fermented with cinnamon at origin to give a unique warm cinnamon flavour. Lightly Roasted with tasting notes of cinnamon, honey and mince pie.
